Greenwich Hospital Team visit HMS Prince of Wales

Staff from Greenwich Hospital took an eye-opening trip to Portsmouth to visit the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier, with which we are proudly affiliated. As a sister ship to HMS Queen Elizabeth, it stands as a jewel in the Royal Navy's fleet.

Hosted by logistics personnel, we got to stand on the 70-metre wide and 280-metre extended flight deck, a space large enough to accommodate three football pitches.

Our tour included the Ops Room, the Bridge, the Flight Deck, and the Ship Control System (SCS), giving us a glimpse of the sheer magnitude of operating this magnificent aircraft carrier.

With 770 crew members, more when carrying aircraft, we got to see and hear how personnel work, live, and sleep onboard, highlighting the privileges and sacrifices of naval life - valuable to us given Greenwich Hospital has supported the Royal Navy since 1694 and continues to award grants to charities and organisations working to support serving and former personnel and their families improve their health and wellbeing.

We witnessed firsthand the dedication and hard work of our Royal Navy, working around the clock to ensure the UK's safety and security, and we share their pride in the technological capability that HMS Prince of Wales amplifies.

Thank you to the officers and ratings for their time and insights generously shared.
