Greenwich Hospital has awarded a £200,000 grant to ALABARÉ to support homeless Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary veterans through the Alabaré Veteran Pathway Programme.

The funding will strengthen supported living accommodation across the charity’s veterans homes in the South West of England and across Wales and contribute to Alabaré’s specialist work with veterans experiencing homelessness and complex challenges after transitioning to civilian life. The programme aims to promote and improve mental health and wellbeing, help individuals sustain positive outcomes, and provide essential welfare and practical support post-service.

Through the Veteran Pathway Programme, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary veterans will receive tailored, person-centred support focused on stabilising circumstances, improving wellbeing, and enabling greater independence. The programme acknowledges the unique experiences of Royal Navy and Royal Marines veterans, responding with trauma-informed, holistic interventions.

The grant also complements ALABARÉ’s employability work, including the award-winning Veterans’ Self Build Scheme and vocational programmes that promote foster confidence and long-term independence.

For every veteran who participates, 97% move into employment, as well as securing a home that they helped build.

 Why This Matters

  •  Up to 7,500 veterans across the UK are considered homeless or sleeping rough.
  • 2,270 veteran households were recorded as homeless or at risk of homelessness in England alone, according to the most recent Government figures.
  • ALABARÉ reports a 122% increase in veteran referrals in the last financial year.

Programme outcomes will be evaluated using a robust mix of quantitative and qualitative measures, including Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) scores, Outcome Star assessments, individual outcome reports, and detailed case management notes. Ongoing beneficiary reviews and feedback will further inform delivery and impact assessment.

Deirdre Mills, Director at Greenwich Hospital, said:

“Greenwich Hospital is delighted to support the work of ALABARÉ through funding. By providing safe accommodation and tailored support, their programme helps some of the most vulnerable Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Royal Fleet Auxiliary veterans rebuild their lives and create positive futures beyond service life.”

Andrew Lord MBE, Chief Executive of ALABARÉ, said:

“This significant grant strengthens our commitment to providing homes, restoring hearts, and empowering minds. With Greenwich Hospital’s support, we can extend trauma-informed care, enhance wellbeing, and offer life-changing pathways to Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Royal Fleet Auxiliary veterans rebuilding their futures.”
