April is the Month of the Military Child

April Month of the Military Child

April marks the Month of the Military Child, highlighting the experiences, resilience, and challenges faced by children in Armed Forces families.

It serves as a reminder of the demands placed on these children and the role they play within their families and communities.

The month also underscores the importance of targeted support and sustained funding in helping them navigate these challenges and achieve positive outcomes.

Throughout the year, partnerships with organisations including the Sailors' Children's Society, Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, Forces Children Scotland, Aggie Weston, Naval Children's Charity, and the Naval Families Federation support the delivery of practical assistance to families. This includes essentials such as food, heating, and school uniforms, alongside access to guidance and emotional support. The needs of Royal Navy families can be complex and varied, particularly during periods of parental deployment, relocation, or other service-related transitions.

In addition to providing emergency and essential support, funding is also directed towards longer-term outcomes. Programmes such as Swim Free, delivered in partnership with the Andrew Simpson Foundation, and Sail Together, delivered by the Royal Naval Sailing Association, aim to offer children access to preventative and developmental opportunities. These include building water confidence and safety skills, as well as developing teamwork and personal skills through sailing.

Alongside supporting physical health, these activities contribute to emotional wellbeing and social development.

By working closely with our partners, Greenwich Hospital ensures that children and young people from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Royal Fleet Auxiliary families are not only supported but are also equipped to look to the future with confidence, hope, and ambition.

As we mark the Month of the Military Child, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the next generation by recognising their distinct experiences, prioritising their needs, and funding consistent, structured support.
